Canada has many beautiful sceneries that attract renowned film directors and producers. Yet, the nation doesn't have a cult following like that in Britain, France, Italy, South Korea, and Japan. The Mask was the first Canadian horror film. It was released in 1961. The following is an essential guide to the top Canadian horror films.
The Brood (1979)
Many Canadian movie lovers can also enjoy visiting Canadian casinos online to play exciting games. First on the list is The Brood that’s among David Cronenberg's collection of films. The Brood is claimed to be more interesting than Dead Ringers and Videodrome despite being less popular. Oliver Reed acts as a psychotherapist who treats Samantha Eggar (Nola), a mentally disturbed mother who is fighting for custody of Candice, her five years old daughter with Art Hindle (Franks) , her ex-husband.
At first, The Brood doesn't look like a horror film. But, the scenes change after the child releases child monsters (a brood) that kill anyone who prevents Candice from winning her custody. David filmed The Brood in the GTA and as you watch the final sequence, you will start wondering why we don't lick newborns like cats.
Black Christmas (1974)
The film is four decades old. Even so, it is creepy and exciting. Black Christmas was the first Canadian movie to use a slasher prototype. Bob Clark directed and produced it. It featured Andrea Martin, John Saxon, Marian Waldman, Margot Kidder, Keir Dullea, Lynne Griffin, and Olivia Hussey. The film inspired directors to shoot many films with young serial killers like Friday the 13th to Scream and Halloween.
Pin (1988)
Pin is a Montreal-shot film that Sandor Stern wrote and directed. He is famous for writing The Amityville Horror. Doctor Linden uses a huge dummy to communicate with patients and his neglected children. David Hewlett acts as Leon, Linden's despondent son and he suffers from schizophrenia. He is emotionally attached to and transfers his character to Pin, a mentally ill commentary.
My Bloody Valentine (1981)
This is a slasher flick that competes with top horror franchises such as A Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp and Halloween. It was filmed in Valentine Bluffs and it narrates about a mine disaster which took place on Valentine's Day. George Mihalka, the film's director, creates original and brutal death scenes that are hard to forget.
The Editor (2014)
Astron-6 released The Editor in 2014. It has satire and pays homage to the Giallo genre. The film resembles a Giallo-comedy as it has violent scenes, slow camera work, and orange-red paint that looks like blood. A woman's face is badly injured in one of the scenes. The Editor resembles an original Giallo and it has jump cuts and replicated lighting.
Filmmaking in Canada is more affordable than in the United States. The Brood, Black Christmas, Pin, My Bloody Valentine, and The Editor are the most famous Canadian horror movies. Most of their crews are Canadian citizens but they appear as if they were filmed in other countries. Some film directors like using the country's harsh weather as a milieu. Moreover, Canadians are known for searching for an identity.
