This would mark Kane Parsons' feature film directorial debut and at 19 years old, he's also the youngest director in A24 history.
Written by Roberto Patino (writer for several episodes of Sons of Anarchy, Westworld, DMZ).
The Backrooms is originally based on a creepypasta that appeared on 4chan back in 2019 and is reportedly one of the first examples of "liminal spaces," which has been described as "an internet aesthetic which includes usually busy locations depicted as unnaturally empty." The Backrooms are essentially an endless maze of office rooms "which are entered by noclipping out of reality in the wrong areas." The term "noclipping" is based on video games, where a player can enter a command that allows them to pass through walls and other objects. You can read more on the subject here.
This is a feature length version of The Backrooms, which is a series of found footage shorts created Kane Parsons (who was 16 at the time) that have garnered nearly 100-million views. You can view the first short below and the rest on Kane's YouTube channel here.
