This project is officially back in development with Paramount Pictures' new genre label Paramount Primal behind it. The new label is being led by J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules (producers behind films Barbarian, Weapons and Companion). The U.S. rights are being licensed from the Craven estate, which includes Craven's widow Iya Labunka and Craven's son Jonathan Craven. Labunka was quoted saying: "We look forward to bringing the world of Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street to a new and completely engaged generation of fans. We know that Wes would have been thrilled to see how horror is taking its long overdue place in the cultural canon. We can’t wait for all of us to sit together in a dark theatre – around the campfire of today – as the next chapter of the Nightmare story unfolds." J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules added the following... "We can’t remember a time before we were fans of Wes Craven. The fact that Iya and Jonathan have entrusted us with this opportunity to help usher a new story into this world is an honor beyond words. We look forward to working alongside them to bring a terrifying new nightmare to audiences everywhere, and to welcome Freddy home." No story details have been revealed outside of it being "set in the world of A Nightmare on Elm Street, [and] based on the original screenplay." (7/13/26)
It's been 10 years since the last update on this rumored project. There's been a lot of back and forth with additional rumors over the years, but nothing concrete and the reason appears to be due to copyright issues. That's according to New Line president and CCO Richard Brener, who had an interview on a variety of projects, where he revealed the following when asked if another movie was in the horizon: "We hope so. It’s complicated because of the rights." Apparently the Wes Craven estate owns the US rights, while New Line owns the international rights, which makes things a bit complicated. Either way, knowing Hollywood it's only a matter of time before we see another movie. (4/2/25)
This project was rumored to be in talks in August of 2015. At the time it was said that it would be scripted by David Leslie Johnson (Red Riding Hood, Wrath of the Titans, The Conjuring 2).
It's said that the studio aims to ignore the 2010 remake.
A remake of the 1984 film from Wes Craven.
