Namaka…the live action version of Moana!
I’m so kidding.

In Hawaiian mythology, Namaka is a revered sea goddess often depicted as the elder sister of Pele, the goddess of fire. Namaka and Pele are polar opposites, known to have an ongoing conflict, embodying the elemental duality of fire and water. Through the vision of uber-talented Frank Merle, the story of this Hawaiian demigod comes to life in a beautifully shot Polynesian thriller.

Wishful musician Alex Cook is on his way to Oahu to accompany his wife for a family reunion/vacation. Setting his sights on purchasing and playing a new ukelele in calm isolation, he is approached by a stunning native girl who becomes instantly mesmerized with his music. Or is it him?

Once the music stops and Alex flashes an innocent smile, the young local bolts into the woods with him hot on her trail. When Alex trips over a random dead body by a tree, he turns to his new infatuation for answers.

With the help of neighborhood legend podcaster Guy Torino (another solid goofball performance from Jamie Kennedy), Alex begins to uncover some strange occurrences during his time with Namaka such as her invisible presence in photos and video, her gifting him a conch shell and requesting a “makana” in return, and the binding ceremony she performs which comprises of the offerings and blood from both to connect them eternally. Oh, let’s not forget that dead body in the woods, or as the police would question “What dead body?” Just like Namaka, there is no proof of its existence.

Alex finds himself getting deeper into the troublesome waters and concludes she has cast a spell over him through voodoo magic. With his family at stake after an erotic episode manipulated by Namaka’s witchy ways, Alex once again turns to his offbeat buddy Guy for some expertise on how to break free from this now unbreakable bond he is caught in.

Namaka is a captivating tale of lust, mystery and longing to escape from a captive world through desperate and treacherous measures. It will definitely leave you with the concept that maybe sleeping with the wrong woman IS dangerous despite the powers she possesses. As Public Enemy once sang: Fight the Power! Alex…I’m talking to you.

OVERALL:
Namaka progresses at a gradual pace. At 90 minutes in length, I felt a ping of disillusionment halfway through, realizing very little had occurred, outside of the disappearance of a dead body. We still have no answers to this cryptic woman and her ancient history, nor the further development of Alex’s fascination with Namaka aside from her obvious beauty. With that said, the climactic revelation that finally appears does make the painful waiting game worth it all. Just remember to avoid the sounds of drums in the distance and you’ll make it off an island in one piece.
